ART HISTORY 101:
Abstract art is about the process of painting itself. It is a composition of form, color and line, not a literal representation of reality. From the Abstract Expressionist to Minimalist Movements, artists placed importance on the process, materials and expressing their individual psyche, often working in monumental size.

Tappan artists Kelsey Shultis, Alison Cooley and Stevie Howell’s large-scale expressive paintings full of color and the artist’s own emotion poured/smeared/flicked/dripped/stroked onto the canvas are in the tradition of Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, Helen Frankenthaler, Joan Mitchell, and more…

Tappan artist Rebecca Lowe Mosena is combining abstract expressionist strokes in the tradition of the artists above mixed with clean line geometric influences with her gridded lines inspired by Barnett Newman, Ellsworth Kelley and Kenneth Noland among others.

Tappan artists Meghan Howland and Lola Rose Thompson are in line with Neo-Expressionist artists like Eric Fischl, Elizabeth Peyton, John Currin, and Marlene Dumas who are responsible for the resurgence of contemporary figurative painting into the “high art” discourse, characterized by expressive, gestural strokes.

Tappan Collective joined forces with LA Opera and KCRW on June 5th to celebrate one of the most popular operas, Tosca. Tappan curated an exhibition of works based on a series of motifs from the opera on display inside the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. Following the performance of Tosca, KCRW’s Aaron Byrd played a live set of mash-ups of opera and modern music.

Art 101: Architectural Humanity

Jay Ezra, an anthropology expert and architecture fanatic, loves to explore space, place, and connectivity. His photography and philosophies resemble the work of Guy Tillim, South African photojournalist turned artist. Both are concerned about the humanity of architecture and how it is inner connected to who those built, occupied, and were a part of it . As Ezra believes there is a “manifestation of ourselves” in buildings. Tillim also tries to capture this sensibility through his photographs. The Grande Hotel, Beira, Mozambique has a long political history that can be felt through the composition of the photograph and the sense of tension between the decrepit dilapidation of the columns and the upward movement of the light. Both literally and figuratively this photograph comments on the human state. Brasillia captures Oscar Neimeyer’s modernist design to reflect a simple, optimistic state of mind. Similar in composition, these pieces visually compliment each other.

Tap in with the newest Tappan artist, Brandy Eve Allen. She is defying time and boundaries with her intricately detailed work. Allen shoots with film and prints her work in her own dark room. She mounts her work on heavy weight matte paper to be drawn on, painted over, and consumed by their new environment. It would be a constant source of inspiration to own one.

Get Inspired with Kelsey Shultis‘ oil and spray paint wonders. One can’t help but channel the popular trend of street art while viewing her work.

Street art is a touchy subject when it comes to whether or not it is deemed art. Art in the Street at MOCA Los Angeles attempted to validate its existence in the contemporary world of art a year and a half ago and we concur. Creation comes in all forms! One of Tappan’s favorite street artists was in Los Angeles last week. Watch his ted talk to hear about the value and meaning his street art projects and how he takes it to a whole new level with “Turning the World Inside Out”.
