Street art is a touchy subject when it comes to whether or not it is deemed art.  Art in the Street at MOCA Los Angeles attempted to validate its existence in the contemporary world of art a year and a half ago and we concur.  Creation comes in all forms!  One of Tappan’s favorite street artists was in Los Angeles last week.  Watch his ted talk to hear about the value and meaning his street art projects and how he takes it to a whole new level with “Turning the World Inside Out”.

ART 101: Appropriation

Appropriation is a common theme among contemporary art. Julian Wellisz’s pieces featured below reflect the use of appropriation in the digital age.  It means to reuse a  found image, technique, style, etc. and re-contextualize it.

Other famed artists who do this include Catherine Opie her photographs  on view now at Regen Projects are appropriating 17th century portraiture, Sherry Levine known for re-photographing photographs as her own and most well know Andy Warhol using Campbell’s soup.
